All Things Serve Him

I’ve discovered a phrase from the psalmist that has repeatedly been a resting place for my spirit: “All things serve you” (Psalm 119:91).

These words brought deep consolation to me after I had experienced an unsettling disappointment. Before company arrived to spend an evening in our home, I had asked the Lord to direct our time together.

The time seemed to go all wrong, though, and what I had hoped would be an uplifting conversation turned into a time of disagreeing about ideas.

During the evening I kept clinging to the phrase “All things serve You.” Silently I prayed, “This is not going as I had hoped, Lord, but all things serve You. You can cause even this evening to serve Your purposes.”

My peace came from believing He would indeed somehow get glory from what He was allowing to happen.

The next day I wrote in my journal, “I do believe, Lord, that even last night is a part of Your design, and that when I’m viewing the whole scheme from eternity, I will praise You. So now by faith, I praise You, and I let go of the disappointment in my spirit.”

I praise You, Jesus, that Your great promise to cause all things to serve You is only limited by my failure to believe it.

“But my eyes are fixed on you, O Sovereign Lord; in you I take refuge” (Psalm 141:8).
