Lies We Believe
Barbara said she tried in vain to control her tongue when speaking with her children. She wanted to convince herself that the problem was their fault. If only they would do what she said, perhaps she wouldn’t have to get angry. She prayed about it repeatedly.
One day in 1995, the Holy Spirit spoke as she read Psalm 52:2-3: “Your tongue plots destruction; it is like a sharpened razor, you who practice deceit. You love evil rather than good; falsehood rather than speaking the truth.”
The Spirit revealed to her that she loved speaking angrily to her children although she regretted it later. What she hated was her inability to control her anger. When the Spirit showed her the truth about her heart, she confessed it to Him. She testifies that God changed her when He revealed the lie she believed.
“We have made a lie our refuge and falsehood our hiding place” (Isaiah 28:15). We, too, can make lies our refuge and under falsehood hide ourselves. Satan has only one tool—lies. Has he told you any of the following lies? Meditate on the scriptures, God’s weapon of truth, to destroy these falsehoods.
Lie: It is impossible for me to control my tongue.
Truth: Psalm 39:1: “I said, ‘I will watch my ways and keep my tongue from sin; I will put a muzzle on my mouth.’”
2 Corinthians 12:9: “But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me.”
Lie: God will not punish me for my disobedience.
Truth: Hebrews 10:26-27: “If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God.”
Psalm 66:18: “If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened.”
Lie: It’s impossible to live a holy life in my situation.
Truth: 2 Corinthians 9:8: “God is able to make all grace abound to you so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.”
Philippians 2:13: “God is working in you, giving you the desire to obey him and the power to do what pleases him.” (NLT)
Thank You, Jesus, for the weapon of Your truth that destroys falsehoods.
