Those Dirty Socks
Soon after Beverly LaHaye was married each morning she would find her husband’s socks rolled up in little round balls right where he had removed them. At first it was no problem. But after several months of picking up his socks, she noticed a slight irritation-not in her back but in her attitude.
One day as she read her Bible a verse seemed to stand out: “And whatever you do whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by Him” (Colossians 3:17). It seemed to say to her, “When you pick up those dirty socks, do it in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.”
Her eyes dropped down a few verses, and she read, “And whatever you do, do it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, and not for men.”
She wasn’t just picking up dirty socks for her husband; she was serving the Lord Jesus by doing this.
Beverly faced a conflict. She saw she had to confess and get her attitudes straightened out. Interestingly, after she confessed, she truly enjoyed serving the Lord and her husband. It was almost a time of devotion each day as she lovingly picked up those blessed dirty socks.
Amazingly those beautiful dirty socks began to disappear without any word spoken. One day her husband just decided to be more careful and pick up after himself. Oh, how she missed those socks.
Jesus, help me to remember that all I do today is for You.
