Who Are We Walking Before?

When God announced, "I am God almighty; walk before me, and be blameless" (Genesis 17:1), it seems that He is saying that for Abraham to be blameless, he has only to walk before God.  

Mary Bosanquet Fletcher (1739-1815) described what it means to walk before God. She said that this term implies "a keeping of his presence, staying our minds on Him. It is to think, speak, and act, as one who always sees the eye of God upon us...It is to have a constant watch that we neither say anything, do anything, nor think anything that may displease him."

It is a result of the "constant abiding in the presence of God....it implies a deliverance from self...becoming pliable to the will of God, as a leaf before the wind having lost all will in his."

What God wanted from Abraham is what He wants from us. He wants us to have a personal relationship with Him in which we say, "I know Your eye is upon Me. Your will toward me is good, and it is safe for me to totally trust that You will guide My ways so I please You."

Both the Old and New Testaments do not describe salvation in terms of a relationship to a certain religion, but rather to our having an ongoing relationship to God.

Dear God, help me to walk before You in a perfectly trusting fellowship. 

"'I will strengthen them in the LORD and in his name they will walk,' declares the LORD."
