The German Lady's Verse

“I am so tired. I’ve been traveling from Germany,” the lady beside me on the airplane said wearily. I learned she was traveling to Kansas City to see her brother who had had back surgery.

I wondered how I could introduce Jesus into our conversation, so I asked about the religion in Germany and what religion she was. I couldn’t understand what she said, but I believed she was a lady of faith. She spoke with great concern about her brother who does not attend church.

If only I could give her a Bible verse, I thought. I often carry my Bible with me on the plane, but this time I had put it in the suitcase. Then I remembered that on my phone I have an application that gives random Bible verses.

I began looking at it and praying as I clicked to find a verse that I thought would be helpful to my new friend. Not finding any that seemed just right, I showed her what happened to be the next verse:

“Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me’ (John 14:6).”

Immediately she began to repeatedly exclaim in her broken English, “Oh, that was my verse when I was 15 at my celebration.” It was the verse given to her at her confirmation and was a life verse for her.

Thank You, Jesus, for loving that precious lady so much that You had just the right Word for her.
